Prolonging the Effects of your Massage: Easy Ways to Add Movement to your Daily Routine

In continuing with our series about how to prolong the effects of your massage, I'd like to discuss movement. So many of us have lifestyles that require us to sit for long periods in front of a computer, or maybe we do a lot of driving, etc. It's common knowledge that movement is beneficial, but where to find the time in our busy schedules?

Here, we discuss how even small adjustments to your daily routine can make a big difference in increasing your physical activity. Here are some simple and easy ways to add movement throughout your day:

Incorporate movement into daily activities:

  • Take the stairs: Instead of the elevator or escalator, choose the stairs whenever possible.

  • Walk or bike for short distances: For nearby destinations, consider walking or biking instead of driving.

  • Use your commute: If you use public transportation, get off a stop early and walk the rest of the way. If driving, park further away and walk to your destination.

  • Do chores: Cleaning, gardening, or other household tasks can contribute to your daily movement.

  • Walk during phone calls: Pace around or walk in place while on phone calls.

Boost movement at work:

  • Take regular breaks: Step away from your desk to stretch, walk around the office, or simply stand up and move every 30-60 minutes.

  • Utilize a standing desk: Alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day.

  • Have walking meetings: If feasible, conduct meetings while walking with colleagues.

  • Use the furthest trash bin: Instead of using the closest one, take a few extra steps to use a further trash bin.

  • Drink more water: This will encourage more trips to the water cooler/fountain, adding more steps.

Engage in active hobbies:

  • Dance: Have a spontaneous dance party at home or join a dance class.

  • Play with kids or pets: Engage in active play that gets you moving, like chasing kids around the playground or playing fetch with your dog.

  • Start a fitness routine: Join a gym, take a fitness class (like yoga, Pilates, or Zumba), or try a workout video online.

  • Find a workout buddy: Having someone to exercise with can provide motivation and accountability.

  • Get a Pool Pass: Personally, I am very heat intolerant. I was struggling to find a safe way to exercise in the extreme summer heat until I got a membership for the local pool. Now I look forward to one of my favorite ways to exercise on a daily basis.

Other helpful tips:

  • Set reminders: Schedule dedicated times for movement or set reminders to get up and move throughout the day.

  • Track your movement: Use a wearable activity tracker or a fitness app to monitor your steps and activity levels.

  • Make it fun: Choose activities that you enjoy and that make you happy.

  • Be patient and compassionate with yourself: It takes time to build new habits, so be kind to yourself and don't get discouraged by setbacks.

I like to schedule my workouts and pool time so I can make sure I set aside time for movement. Remember: the best exercise plan is the one you enjoy because you will stick with it. Let me know what your favorite summer activities are!
